Broadway musical is an apt tribute to a legendary choreographer

by Kaizaad Kotwal

Columbus-Bob Fosse, 1927-1987, is a legend who has left his mark indelibly on musical theatre and dancers the world over. In 1973 he became the only director in history to win Oscar, Tony and Emmy awards in the same year.

It is only fitting then that such a legend be honored and remembered in a musical. Fosse hit Broadway in 1999 with style and pizzazz, walking away with the Tony for best new musical.

Featuring 29 musical numbers and 28 dancers, Fosse takes the audience on a tour

of sheer magic and pure entertainment through the highlights of an amazing and prolific career. Some favorites include "Steam Heat" from Pajama Game, “Big Spender" from Sweet Charity, "Mein Herr" from Cabaret, and "Razzle Dazzle" from Chicago.

Openly gay actor, singer and dancer Rick Delancy says that he absolutely loves being in the show because Fosse's "choreography is an art form that should not get lost and this musical continues his legacy so that the next generation can be touched by him."

Fosse ever since he performed in Rich Man's Fruit as part of a gig he did on a cruise ship. Delancy connects with what many others feel about Fosse's choreography the sensuality and the detailed ways in which the body connects so intimately and holistically with the music.

Fosse will be strutting its stuff at the Ohio Theatre in Columbus October 17-22: Tuesday through Saturday at 8 p.m., Saturday and Sunday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 7:30 p.m. Tickets range from $38.00 to $62.50; call 614224-7654.

'Rocky Horror' to descend on Axis night club

by Kaizaad Kotwal

Columbus-The cult classic Rocky Horror Show is descending in October at the Axis night club. The production, presented by Stage 5 Rep, promises to be a crowd pleaser with oodles of talent on stage and behind.

In the words of cast members Jennifer Milligan, who plays Janet, Chris Sullivan (her nerdy boyfriend Brad) and Brian Foley (Rocky), "We give good glitter." Foley also adds that the show has "more leather than a herd of cows."

Rocky Horror brings together space aliens, transvestites and a menagerie of other characters in a musical satire of the sexual undercurrents in 1950s horror films. It is one of the best audience-participation shows ever, including a bubble orgy at the end.

Dr. Frank N. Furter is an alien mad scientist who creates boy-toy Rocky for his pleasure. But when Rocky turns out straight, Frank deflowers 'Brad and Janet and begins the show's sexual and rock-n-roll shenanigans.

Sullivan joked of his character Brad that, "You never know which way he's going. He tries to be straight but doesn't succeed." Milligan quickly adds that Janet "takes it whenever she can get it."

The musical promises great music, dazzling choreography, and a

healthy dose of

rambunctiousness.

Columbus-The gay and lesbian Reality Theatre will open its 16th season with Patrick Marber's Closer. This is a must-see and one of the literary gems of contemporary drama.

In this insightful and probing piece of drama, four lives intertwine over 41⁄2 years in a stinging look at modern love and betrayal. Dan, an obituary writer, meets Alice, a stripper, and writes a novel inspired by their meeting. While posing for his book jacket cover, Dan meets Anna, a photographer. Larry, a dermatologist, searches the Internet chat rooms for love. A series of pass-thelover scenes occur in which this quartet struggles to find intimacy but can't seem to get closer.

Closer won the 1998 Olivier Award for Best Play and the 1999 New York Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Foreign Play. The characters struggle humorously and with poignancy in the search for love and sex. The play also promises the first ever onstage cyber-sex scene between two men. In a case of mistaken identities, that is bound to bring the house down.

The play also boasts one of Columbus's theatrical dream teams with Lynn Roth directing, Jackie Bates as production stage manager, and starring Lori Cannon, Carney Gray, Creighton James and Laura Gale.

Closer is playing Thursday through Saturday at 8 pm until October 28, and Sunday, October 15 and 22 at 7 pm. Performances are at the Short North Playhouse, 736 North Pearl St.; call 614-294-7541 for reservations. ✔
